What are the requirements for admission to Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School (GCHSS)?

For the Matriculation Course (MC), you must be in possession of five (5) passes in:

  • the Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) at Grade 5 or better or at Level 3
  • or at SSC&P Level 3 (as awarded in July 2020 only)
  • or at DQSE accredited GEM 16+ Level 3 (as awarded in July 2021 only)

The subjects must include: Maltese, English Language, Mathematics and any other two subjects.  If you are in possession of these qualifications, you will be accepted as a regular student.

For the Advanced, Intermediate and SEC (O) Level Course (AIO), you must be in possession of four (4) passes in:

  • the Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) at Grade 5 or better or at Level 3
  • or at SSC&P Level 3 (as awarded in July 2020 only)
  • or at DQSE accredited GEM 16+ Level 3 (as awarded in July 2021 only)

Students who are over the age of 18 or have completed two years at sixth form level can apply for the Individual Programme for Adult Learners (IPAL). Choice of subject is according to specific needs of students and availability.

What happens if I was sick or quarantined for one or more of the SEC June 2021 session examinations?

Since you will still be eligible to sit for the October SEC 2021 session, you may still register with us as a probationary student.

What happens if I am a certified vulnerable student and in spite of MATSEC’s Access Arrangements for Vulnerable Students I cannot sit for either of the two SEC Sittings in June and October 2021?

If you missed both the SEC examination sessions (June/October 2021) due to your certified vulnerability status, you will still be eligible to start the academic year as a regular student if:

  • you obtain a Level 3 in your Secondary School Certificate and Profile (SSC&P) or
  • you obtain a  Level 3 in the DQSE accredited GEM 16+ (as awarded in  July 2021) in the following 5 subjects: Maltese, English Language, Mathematics and any other two subjects.

What does it mean to be a probationary student?

This means that you would be required to obtain all SEC passes from your SEC October 2021 session to continue following your course of choice.

How can I change from probationary to regular student?

You will either have to obtain a pass in the required subjects for the course you have chosen in the October 2021 session, or select a new programme of study from the Prospectus which corresponds to your SEC qualifications.

How many subjects will I be studying at GCHSS?

For the MC course (2 years), you will be studying two subjects at Advanced Level and four at Intermediate Level (including SOK). Students who have only passed two out of the three core subjects (Maltese, Mathematics and English) may still apply for the MC course and study the required subject at SEC level.

For the AIO course (2 years), you will be studying:
– either four subjects at any level as long as at least one of them is at Advanced or Intermediate Level;
– or three subjects at Advanced Level (if you want to study in a foreign university)

The IPAL course is a one year course intended to provide a customised programme. Subjects chosen are available based on time table constraints.

Will GCHSS accept other (overseas) qualifications instead of SEC qualifications?

Yes, GCHSS will accept comparable overseas qualifications for admission.

Will the University of Malta require me to obtain either SEC Grades (1-5) or SEC Level 3 in SEC Maltese, English Language and Mathematics?
